THE DECEASED REGISTER
What is the purpose of
the Register?
To reduce the amount of direct mail and telemarketing calls to the deceased, helping to avoid unnecessary distress among the bereaved, as well as reducing the risk of identity fraud.
How does the service work?
The Bereavement Register is a free service for the bereaved to register the name and address of the deceased, which are then added to a secure data bank. Companies wishing to mail details of their products and services will use information held on The Bereavement Register for the removal of any deceased’s details that matched to their database. So far this service has prevented ¼ billion items of direct mail to the deceased.
How can I register a death?
You can click here to go to the online registration pages of The Bereavement Register website where you will be asked for the deceased’s name, address, birth date and date of death. You can also telephone the 24 hour helpline to register the details over the phone or request a FREEPOST form on 01732 467940.
How long will it take for the unwanted post to the deceased to stop?
You should see a significant decrease within 6 weeks and virtually no mail within 6 months. If you do still continue to receive unwanted mail you can forward it to us at the FREEPOST address below so we can contact the companies on your behalf:
The Bereavement Register, FREEPOST, Sevenoaks, Kent , TN13 1XR
How can I be sure that the details of the deceased are not usd for other purposes?
The Data Protection Act prevents us from using the details of the deceased for anything other than the purpose it was originally obtained for. We also have strict licensing agreements with the direct mail companies to safeguard the information we collect.
Who is behind The Bereavement Register?
The service is brought to you by The REaD Group plc. This organisation has been helping thousands of companies to use their own data responsibly, by encouraging them from mailing the deceased, people who have moved house and those who simply aren’t interested.
